The Gospel in Brief Russian Edition edition by Leo Tolstoy Literature Fiction eBooks
I bought two versions of The Gospel In Brief, from different translators from the Russian (one by way of French). I just couldn't believe my eyes when I read the first translation, I had to see it from another translator. Yep, he really said that! Both versions are fine so if you can find the free version take it.I am surprised that Tolstoy today is known for War and Peace, Anna Karenina, etc. when The Gospel In Brief, (and his Confession which has various titles, about his enlightenment regarding the Gospels), are so much more important, in my mind. Why is nobody talking about this book today?
While many have used the bible to justify violence and war, Tolstoy going back to the original Greek presents Jesus as having a message basically loving and peaceful. How could Jesus' message ever be justified to exclude or harm anyone, Tolstoy wonders.
Much emphasis is placed on the Love commandments: Love Others As Yourself, Love Your Neighbors, and Love Your Enemies.
Tolstoy condenses the four gospels into one story. You may find this sacrilegious, and it may be. But it is definitely worth reading, even if you disagree with his interpretations.
He felt his interpretations of the original Greek were no less credible than the interpretations that have come to be printed as "the bible."
Has Bart Ehrman read this book? What would Dr. Erhman think of Tolstoy's interpretation of the Greek? Does it pass the three criteria of multiple attestation, contextual credibility and dissimilarity?

The Gospel in Brief Russian Edition edition by Leo Tolstoy Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
First let me state, I consider myself a follower of the teachings of Jesus Christ. My struggles through my life have been mostly with the embarrassing masses of Christians misbehaving and the odd dogmatic precepts of so many churches and denominations. Leo Tolstoy, who is an impressive thinker and writer nails it! Read this book!
This is a brilliant interpretation of the gospel message. For anyone with a leaning toward mysticism, or a sense that the traditional dogma of Christianity misses the point of what Jesus taught, Tolstoy's reinterpretation is well worth reading. Know going in that he discards things like the virgin birth, resurrection, and all miracles. He focuses strictly on the teachings from a perspective that aligns nicely with non-Dualism, Buddhism, Vedanta, etc.
That said, this translation looks like it was done by shoddy algorithm. In evaluating typed pages, the program frequently spit out the wrong word, so there is some common sense interpretation required by the reader.
Wow, Tolstoy had a remarkably liberal view of the gospels. I don't agree with all his "interpretations." But he claimed to have retranslated the gospels from the original Greek, and to have summarized the four into one book. While you may hate some of his interpretations, we should all read this book. Why should we read bible interpretations we disagree with? Because this gives us a broader perspective for our own faith. Questioning the wisdom passed down by the line of popes is healthy, and as we ponder we come to conclusions that may be truer to Jesus' intentions than what the Popes and Bishops have decided was best for us. Tolstoy may not have arrived at "The " one and only Truth, but I believe his pondering was healthy for him and for us to ponder.
This is specifically a review of the February 2011 version of the book translated by Dustin Condren. There was one reviewer that said the Isabel Hapgood didn't do a great job with the translation. In the Foreword of the 2011 edition, Condren notes that Hapgood's translation was based on a version of the book compiled and edited by one of Tolstoy's students, Vladimir Chertkov. He also pointed out that Chertkov had made many editorial changes and had omitted the conclusion in Tolstoy's original work. Condren, however, only referred to the original texts written by Tolstoy when writing this translation.
Now, let's talk about the book. Nobody in their right mind can read this book and say that it is heresy. If anyone says that it is wrong, then he/she has some growing up to do. If you are a devout Christian, prepare for your beliefs to be challenged. If you are an Atheist, you might want to reconsider your vehement rejection of anything religious because the main message of the book is simple love everyone.
Tolstoy does not discuss the immaculate conception or how it happened, and he doesn't talk about the resurrection. All he talks about is the life of Jesus from the time of his birth, to his crucifixion, and speaks of what he taught, rather what what contemporary religious figures would have you believe is the true meaning of Christianity.
This is a quote from the book
"All external worship is not only false and harmful when it facilitates evil deeds, but it is harmful because the person that fulfills external ordinances considers himself correct and frees himself from the need to perform any acts of love."
If you can't relate to that or don't know anyone who does that, then you either live under a rock, or you do not have the mental capacity to process information. We are living in a terrible place where greed and power are the predominant themes, rather than love and peace. The way religions have been interpreted is one of the leading causes of this terrible state of affairs we find ourselves in because it perpetuates the delusion that there is an "us" and a "them," creating war, conflict, and unremitting suffering. Whatever you believe, you have to read this book because it is apparent that Jesus' original message, which has since been defiled, is one of purity and love, rather than one of worshiping a God in the sky to get into heaven or escape from hell. It is all about the way you act, and not about going to church, or saying your prayers. If you pray everyday, but you curse a man with all your heart when you are backing up out of your driveway and he hits your car with his, then your prayers have been rendered meaningless. If you are a priest who preaches obedience to God, but then you go and molest little boys, you might want to reconsider what you're doing for a living.
So read the book, and start acting with love everyday of your life rather than hope to get into heaven by saying grace at the dinner table.
